SUSTAINABILITY

The beverage industry finds itself facing down a triple threat: climate-driven commodity volatility, heightening regulatory frameworks and a critical need for water security.

For industry giants like Diageo and Heineken, climate risk is no longer a peripheral corporate social responsibility( CSR) concern; it is a primary strategic threat to business continuity.
As rising temperatures compromise crop yields and extreme weather events destabilise logistics networks, the function of procurement has shifted from transactional buying to value-based sourcing. As many look at embedding sustainability into the core of their sourcing, production and distribution operations, these organisations are building a buffer against the volatility reshaping global manufacturing.
Securing the source through regenerative agriculture The resilience of the brewing and distilling industry is inextricably linked to the health of the agricultural systems that provide its raw materials: barley, hops, maize and peat. To mitigate upstream vulnerabilities, both Diageo and Heineken have launched expansive regenerative agriculture programmes focused on soil health and carbon sequestration.
Diageo’ s“ Spirit of Progress” plan exemplifies this shift toward securing the“ grain to glass” lifecycle.
