HEINEKEN’ S PATH TO NET ZERO
Advancing toward a net zero value chain is rarely linear, particularly when managing a global footprint across diverse operating contexts. This strategy prioritises highimpact intervention over a systematic“ one size fits all” approach.
The Targets
• 2030: Reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions to net zero; achieve a 26 % reduction in Scope 3 emissions.
• 2040: Achieve full net zero across Scopes 1, 2 and 3.
• Validation: All goals are validated by the Science Based Targets initiative( SBTi).
Core Focus Areas
• Thermal Solutions( Scope 1): Addressing the“ thermal challenge” by tailoring lowcarbon heating solutions to the local
energy context of each specific brewery rather than applying a universal model.
• Renewable Electricity( Scope 2): Combining new generation capacity via Power Purchase Agreements( PPAs) with energy attribute certificates in emerging markets.
• Strategic Sourcing( Scope 3): Prioritising the largest emission drivers – packaging and agriculture – through long-term collaboration with strategic suppliers.
The Reality of Implementation
• Decarbonisation at scale remains heavily influenced by external factors, including national infrastructure, policy developments and the broader pace of the global energy transition. Success relies on balancing emission reductions with energy security and economic feasibility.
