LOOKING BACK ON PROCUREMENT BEFORE WE LOOK FORWARD

As we look ahead to 2026, with the transformative advancements expected from AI and automation reshaping procurement, it’ s worth reflecting on how far the function has come. In 2006, procurement professionals navigated the Public Contracts Regulations 2006, which highlighted the rise of e-procurement tools such as dynamic purchasing systems and electronic auctions. That year also saw the introduction of a Policy on Green Procurement, making environmental performance a mandatory consideration alongside price and quality.

While the core of procurement leadership remains consistent, the arrival of agentic and generative AI marks a new frontier – one that could drastically redefine the function when we look back two decades from now.
