“ We’ ve been impressed by what Globality has delivered for our procurement organisation over the years, and the early results from Autonomous Mode are the most exciting yet,” says Steve Dyson, VP of Global Indirect Procurement at HP.“ We’ re competitively sourcing spend we simply didn’ t have the capacity to reach before.”
Autonomous vs copilot vs automated It is increasingly difficult for procurement managers to navigate this changing market. The constantly changing terminology and definitions are adding to the confusion.
The new market is a spectrum of decision-making authority, rather than three separate technologies. It is now a question of how much of the decisionmaking is being handed to AI and where the human decision-making comes in.
An automated approach includes no AI decision-making or judgement. It executes a fixed, predefined workflow faster and more consistently. It adds speed and organisation to the existing way of doing things, rather than deciding anything.
Take the same negotiation. Automation follows the process it was given, but it does not recognise that the supplier is testing its leverage. The price increase goes unchallenged, or it sits on pause until a person intervenes. If it is processed as part of the workflow, nobody catches it, the procurement manager finds out at the quarterly review. If it gets routed to a human instead, what you have is an expensive tool in the stack that flags outliers. Not exactly AI.
A copilot sits further along that spectrum: it reasons alongside the user but does not act on its own – it proposes, and the human decides. Say a supplier makes a move in a negotiation. A copilot will recognise it and help build the response: it evaluates the situation and drafts a data-backed counter.
