Q. HOW IS THE ROLE OF THE CHIEF PROCUREMENT OFFICER EVOLVING AS THEY ARE ASKED TO DRIVE INNOVATION AND ADD VALUE ACROSS THE ENTIRE CHAIN?
» This is an excellent and very common question from our clients.
The CPO of the future – and the future is now – plays the role of an architect of innovation. They must be the driver, alongside the IT department, in this continuous pursuit of evolution.
The future CPO goes beyond being a business partner; they become a partner for business. Knowing the market’ s cutting-edge solutions and bringing them into the organisation, while also dedicating time to building strategic alliance relationships with stakeholders and suppliers, has become a priority. So have the ESG agenda and advanced category and risk management.

The CPO needs to be the right hand of the CFO and the left hand of the COO. Silos within companies can no longer exist; that should be a thing of the past. Therefore, the CPO must have the skill to build bridges across the organisation.
Q. LOOKING TO 2030, WHAT DOES‘ BEST-IN-CLASS’ VALUE CHAIN MANAGEMENT IN LATIN AMERICA LOOK LIKE, AND HOW CAN ORGANISATIONS START PREPARING FOR IT NOW?
» Specifically in LATAM, the challenge is somewhat greater than in the USA and Europe. The maturity level of most companies, on a scale of 1 to 5, tends to be around level 2, reaching a maximum of level 3. Naturally, there are exceptions of companies that are already best-in-class and innovative( level 5).
The cultural aspect is key for Heads and CPOs to secure C-level sponsorship for the necessary transformation, and this doesn’ t always happen at the required speed.
We have already executed over 500 Transformation projects, the majority in this region( LATAM). The benefits are entirely tangible, and this has been encouraging new companies to seek us out to begin their own transformational journey.
Preparing for this change requires planning, not necessarily high investment. The important thing is for the company to understand the importance of and support the procurement transformation. We are on the right track, and much has already evolved, but there is still a significant path for companies in Latin America to travel. We already see this movement happening across various countries.
