When does circularity enter the design process? In the past, an organisation may have asked whether packaging could be recycled once a concept had already been developed. Today, Dane explains, these questions must come first in the design process, dictating decision-making, and taking into account whether it will protect product quality and food safety. Will pet parents know what to do with it? And can it be manufactured at scale? But circularity isn’ t just about new materials.
“ As new formats emerge, we need to ensure our factories can adapt and continue to deliver at scale and pace, whether that’ s upgrading equipment, developing new processes or training teams to work with different substrates,” explains Dane.“ Capacity planning is equally important, helping us anticipate future demand and prepare our network for what’ s coming next. Regulation has accelerated this shift, but the bigger change is in the mindset of all our Associates.”
