INSIDE VATTENFALL’ S MISSION TO DECARBONISE SUPPLIERS
Vattenfall has signed a 15-year power purchase agreement with chemicals company LyondellBasell to supply fossil-free electricity from the Nordlicht 1 offshore wind farm starting in 2028. LyondellBasell will purchase approximately 450 gigawatt hours annually for plastics production, equivalent to powering 128,500 German households.
The Nordlicht 1 wind farm is located 85 km north of Borkum island in the German North Sea and features 68 Vestas turbines generating 980 MW capacity. Vattenfall owns 51 % of the project while BASF holds 49 %. The wind farm awaits final investment approval and is scheduled for grid connection in 2028.
This partnership reflects Vattenfall’ s strategy to decarbonise not only its own operations but also support suppliers, partners and customers in transitioning away from fossil fuels. Vattenfall plans to use its share of the wind farm’ s electricity generation to supply German customers with clean energy.
