PROCUREMENT STRATEGY
The global technology market is worth more than US $ 5tn. Every corner of modern life is reliant on tech and without it, sustainability would be an impossible goal.
The technology industry as a whole contributes to around 3 % of global emissions, a similar footprint size to aviation. Data centres, servers and devices all need to be powered. E-waste containing toxic substances like lead and arsenic is making its way into oceans and soil.
“ Irrespective of what AI does or where the world of devices moves, a safe assumption will be that going forward humans and machines will consume more and more data,” says Subho Mukherjee, Vice President, Global Head of Sustainability at Nokia.
“ Our main focus is how we can decouple energy consumption from the data growth curve.”

NOKIA’ S LEGACY
Nokia’ s legacy of innovation began in 1865. Its name comes from the town of Nokia near the Nokianvirta River in Finland where Co-Founder Fredrik Idestam built his second paper mill.
In 1902, Nokia began generating electricity under the leadership of Co-Founder Leo Mechelin. The company was acquired by Finnish Rubber Works after the First World War who then also acquired Finnish Cable Works.
Bell Telephone Labs was created in 1925 to bring together the research and development activities with around 4,000 scientists, engineers and staff. Its research and innovations made changes around the world, from developing the understanding of volume and discovering the Big Bang to satellites and solid-state electronics. In 2016, Nokia acquired Bell Labs’ owner Alcatel- Lucent and renamed it Nokia Bell Labs. Nokia began venturing into mobile communications in the 1960s eventually leading to the creation of the Nokia 1100. This became the best selling phone of all time with more than 250 million devices sold.
The company sold its mobile phone business to Microsoft in 2014 and changed its focus to digitalisation and communications. It is one of the biggest manufacturers of 5G infrastructure and continues to research and innovate new technologies, as well as licenses its patents. procurementmag. com 99
